Only found in Karelia, Russia. No one knows exactly how it came about, it is after all over 2 billion years old and predates humans by a long way, but there are two theories about how it was formed. Shungite is composed mostly of pure carbon and is the only known natural mineral to contain fullerenes, which are believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants that shield our bodies from the effects of free radicals and other negative and harmful influences in our environment. The spherical molecules of fullerene in shungite make it one of the most effective means of personal protection, healing and water cleansing. Elite Shungite has the highest amount of carbon, so it has the largest amount of fullerenes and thus is the most effective type.
Types of Shungite
Type 1 or Elite (Noble) Shungite - Up to 98% Carbon
Silver metallic appearance and conchoidal patterning.
Only about 1% of Shungite is Elite. Normally sold in its natural raw shape.
Elite Shungite is the most effective and fastest type for water purification, EMF/5G shielding and restorative powers.
Type 2 or Petrovsky Shungite – Typically contains around 50 to 75% carbon
Dark grey appearance, the colour is in between the black type 3 and the silver type 1. The high amount of carbon makes it an effective healing and protection stone. It can also be used for water purification.
Type 3 or Black Shungite – Typically contains around 30 to 50% carbon
Deep black in colour. This is most common form of shungite.
Black Shungite is the most common type of Shungite used for water purification and carved shungite such as spheres, pyramids and jewellery.

If using shungite for healing or protection it is recommended to cleanse your shungite every 1-4 weeks. Differently cleansing methods include:
Smudging with herbs or incense
Placed inside singing bowls while being played
Salt water- soak for 1-24 hours
Cleansing crystals such as amethyst of clear quartz- the piece should be bigger than your shungite and your shungite should be left on top for 24-48 hours
Sunlight or moonlight- moonlight (overnight), sunlight (try not to have direct sunlight as this can be very strong for some crystal and leave anywhere from 1-8 hours
Bury in dirt for 24-48 hours
Take your crystals to the beach and wash them in the ocean
Selenite wand- Pass the wand around your crystal to clear away the energy.
