Checking the ingredients of your menstrual products is JUST as important as checking the ingredients in your food. A woman uses over 12,000 tampons or pads in a lifetime, yet regular (non natural/non certified organic) products usually include such chemicals and toxins as polyethylene, polypropylene, rayon, bleach and conventional cotton. Not things you'd want near some of the most delicate and absorbent tissue in your body, this tissue contains a high number of blood vessels and mucous membranes, all of which are incredibly efficient at carrying chemicals and other materials throughout the body.
What ingredients will you find in non organic products?
Viscose Rayon/Rayon Derived from bleached wood pulp and manufactured using a 14- step process that uses many chemicals. Rayon increases the absorbency of tampons and has been linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Non-Organic Cotton Considered one of the world’s dirtiest crops, using more than 16% of the world’s total insecticides. Plus, 7 of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton human carcinogens (cancer causing).
Chlorine Ever wondered how your products become super white? They are commonly bleached using either chlorine. The byproduct of chlorine bleaching, dixion, is a toxic carcinogen linked to endocrine disruption, fertility issues, thyroid conditions, PCOS, hormonal imbalances and cystic acne, thyroid conditions, endometriosis, and even cancer.
Polyester A synthetic fibre, made from petroleum & coal.
Fragrance
An artificial scent that is a know endocrine disruptor.
Let’s break down the organic advantages:
No pesticide residue
No endocrine-disrupting elements
Lower the risk of TSS
Chemical free
No dioxin & fragrances
Usually biodegradable & plastic free
Better for the environment & wildlife
Many are better-constructed to reduce risk of fibres being left behind
Many women claim that their severe menstrual symptoms lessened after making the switch to organic products
Notes:
The best way to be sure if your product is safe is to choose Certified Organic, chlorine & perfume free so you know that it's been officially assessed.
It is also recommended to try and purchase products that are unbleached & plastic free.
Always listen to your body and what products work best for you, whether its tampons, pads or cups etc
I generally do not recommend period underwear as they have been shown to have chemicals in them. But please do your own research, speak to companies and make a decision that feels best for you.
